Today after our classes one of my co-teacher John took me to pick up the results of my medical examination. We then took those results and delivered them to the immigration office (which was almost impossible for us to find) so I could finally apply for my Alien Registration Card. John doesn't have a car so I had my very first chance to ride the subway. The Seoul subway system is one of the best in the world and it was very easy to navigate as the signs and announcements are both in Korean and English. We did a lot of walking but I had a good time as I got to see some of the adjoining city of Ilsan. Once we were done John took me out for a traditional Korean meal which consists many many different varieties of prepared vegetables and meats all served in small portions. You just help yourself to whatever you like. All meals are served with short grain sticky rice. It was great and I enjoyed myself very much. The dishes I enjoyed most included: Doraji, Gaji and the most expensive fish in Korea that is only available at this time of year the Goolbi. The meal also included Kimchi of course. Once we finished our meal we met up with John's parents who gave me a ride home. John's mother has invited me to join their family for dinner in October. Koreans celebrate the foundation of Korea (Kaechon-jol, also called Tan'gun Day) at the beginning of October so it’s a big deal. According to legend, the god-king Tan-gun founded the Choson Kingdom in 2333 B.C.
Yes that is a very very real look of worry on my face…this is in fact a meal for 2!!!
John told be that Korea is one of the few Asian countries in which it’s people use metal chopsticks. The reason is that because metal chopsticks are traditionally much more expensive to buy and use you honour your guests when you offer them for use at meal times.
