Kimbap Addiction

Posted by Tony Rubino Monday, October 5, 2009

I keep meaning to write about kimbap (pronounced gimpab) but I keep forgetting to.  So here goes…kimbap has quickly become one of my favourite things to eat here.  It’s very cheap, about $1.50 Canadian at the low end of the scale, and amazingly tasty and good for you to boot.  It’s considered Korean fast food…kind of like getting pizza or a sub after the bar.  But it’s not just popular after the bar.  Kimbap shops are always busy and there are tons of them around.

So what is a kimbap you ask?  Why it’s a Korean sushi roll.  A roll of rice wrapped with seaweed all jammed with stuff in the middle.  I know it’s pretty technical so here is a home made kimbap how to video link for you.  As you can see in the video the stuff in the middle can vary as can the outside wrap.  The most common variety has sweet pickled radish inside with ham, egg, julienned carrots, mayonnaise and seaweed.  This is the most basic variety and there are many many variations on it.  My favourite is minus the ham but includes a sesame leaf and tuna.  Yummmmm…eating one now by the way!!!  Here is a link showing a video of what it’s like when I order one at the kimbap shop.

This is what the common kimbap looks like after it’s rolled and then cut up.

Kimbap

Try it at home, you can put anything you want in it really and it’s pretty easy to do.
